Prayers of the People/Oración de los Fieles

Belated!  I got to write our (English) Prayers of the People for the season of Easter and our Oración de los Fieles for Pentecost.  The English ones are pretty freewheeling because I wrote them on a plane hours before they were due for the bulletin.  The Spanish ones are loosely based on Form V from El Libro de Oración Común (translation follows).

Prayers of the People: Easter 2014

God of revelation, anoint all who seek you and all who serve you with a discerning and courageous spirit, that we may faithfully build your kingdom on earth as in heaven.

Oh God, hear our prayer.

God of power, guide each of us as we stand and take responsibility in our daily lives– in our homes, in our workplaces, in our neighborhoods– and keep us ever mindful that all true authority comes from you and returns to you, no matter how small the task.

Oh God, hear our prayer.

God of exquisite beauty and creativity, extend to us your boundless joy and concern for the earth and all that lies within it; remind us of the vulnerability we share with every tiny living thing.

Oh God, hear our prayer.

God of sacramental and righteous living, bless and strengthen the priesthood and diakonia of all believers in our congregation and community, including Greg, Jaime, Dennis, Aaron and those called to ordained life.

Oh God, hear our prayer.

God of tenderness and justice, sustain and embolden all who suffer: the poor, the incarcerated, the sick, the dispossessed, the abused, the afflicted and the lonely [especially…].  May we work together in beloved community to end those sufferings which are preventable, and soothe those which are not.

Oh God, hear our prayer.

God of a love as strong as death, keep our dearly departed close to your heart, especially [… as well as] all who are taken from us too soon, or taken from us in violence.  Surround us with that great cloud of witnesses that we may honor their deaths with our lives.

Oh God, hear our prayer.

O Dios, ten piedad.

Translation:

For the holy Church of God: that she may be filled with truth, courage and love—a faithful reflection of your will here on earth as in Heaven, we beg you Lord.

Oh God, have pity.

For the peace of the world: that between nations and people may grow a spirit of respect, mercy, humility and understanding, we beg you Lord.

Oh God, have pity.

For those who hold positions of power and authority: that they may serve justice and promote the dignity of each person and, when they fail, that we remind them of their obligations to the people, we beg you Lord.

Oh God, have pity.

For the whole holy people of God.  For the teachers and students of our Sunday school.  For our acolytes, readers, musicians and lay Eucharistic ministers.  For our ministers of hospitality and maintenance.  For Aaron our postulant, Jaime and Dennis our priests, and Greg our bishop, we beg you Lord.

Oh God, have pity.

For the poor, the migrants, the detainees, the abused, the oppressed, the addicts, the sick, and the afflicted [especially…].  For all those who suffer and for all those who are in danger: that they may find relief and protection among us, we beg you Lord.

Oh God, have pity.

For all who have died in the communion of your Church, and for those whose faith only you know [especially…].  That with the ever Blessed Mother of God, Saint Luke, and all your saints they may have rest in that place where there is neither pain nor sadness, but eternal life, we beg you Lord.

Oh God, have pity.
